Was bought his first set by his father after seeing an advert in a newspaper, and broke three of them in his first week. Caddied on weekends to earn money to play and then turned professional at 16 years old. Secured his European Tour card after his third attempt at Qualifying School but would make four more appearances at the School before making his breakthrough. Played 685 European Tour events, just 21 behind all-time leader Sam Torrance. His victory at the European Masters in 1993 cemented his place in that year's Ryder Cup at The Belfry. Reached the milestone of 500 tournaments in 2004, just a fortnight after winning the British Masters. Secured his fifth European Senior Tour title with victory at the 2016 MCB Tour Championship. Carded the lowest ever round on the Senior Tour, a 12 under par round of 60, en route to winning the 2017 Willow Senior Golf Classic.
