David Park virtually led from start to finish to win the Oki Telepizza Challenge at Golf del Guadiana in Badajoz, his second Challenge Tour triumph.

Yet it was no easy victory and in a dramatic finale the 24-year-old Welshman, who had been three shots clear at one stage, had to sink a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd green to finally shake off playing partner Ola Eliasson.

Park, a member of the 1997 Walker Cup squad, shared the lead after an opening 66, was two in front at halfway and one clear of Eliasson going into the final round. If he could maintain his form in a week of rain and wind in western Spain he would be home and dry. When Park led his playing partner by three strokes after eight holes it appeared to be going to plan. But the drama was about to unfold.

In what was strictly a two-horse race with the rest making little or no progress towards the two leaders, the man from Hereford dropped a shot at the ninth while his Swedish rival picked up birdies at the tenth, 11th and 14th holes to edge one in front.

Both suffered bogeys over the run-in and when they reached the 72nd tee, Eliasson was still a shot ahead. But the 28-year-old Marbella-based Swede contrived to open the door slightly and Park forced his way through.

Eliasson ran up a bogey-six after finding sand and missing a 10-foot par-saving putt, but Park flew a third shot wedge to 20 feet and holed it for birdie and a dramatic victory. Both finished with 70, Park for an 11-under-par 277 and a one-shot victory.

"I knew I had to make a birdie to force a play-off but I didn't expect Ola would bogey the 18th," said a relieved Park. "It was a tough day in the wind and Ola was coming after me with birdies. He played and putted well and even when I was three ahead it crosses your mind about losing the tournament, especially when your partner is making birdies. But I suppose it was my day."

Eliasson was naturally disappointed to be pipped at the post. "I felt really bad at taking six at the last," he said. "I wanted to win in what was my first tournament of the year and I feel frustrated.

"I holed a lot of good putts and I was playing well but David played much better. But that's life."

Such was the supremacy of the leading pair that Sammy Daniels of South Africa and Scotland's Euan Little both shot 71 to share third place on 286, eight shots further back.

Only one player, José Manuel Carriles, broke 70 on that windy final day and it enabled him to climb to joint fifth on 287 along with fellow Spaniard Patxi Amatriain, Sweden's Eric Carlberg, and Greig Hutcheon of Scotland. Ryder Cup Spaniard Ignacio Garrido had been in the hunt at halfway on four under but slipped back to end on one over.
