There is a three-way tie between Knud Storegaard of Denmark, American Brian Nelson and Gary Murphy from Ireland after the first round of the Is Molas Challenge Open in Sardinia.
All three carded seven-under-par 65s on a day of perfect conditions when 45 players beat par.
The trio are two strokes clear of English pair Simon Hurd and Grant Hamerton, Markus Brier of Austria and anther Irishman, David Higgins.
Storegaard, 26, and 32-year-old Texan, Nelson, early starters from the 10th tee, set the clubhouse target, Storegaard with eight birdies and Nelson with an eagle and six birdies.
They sat on top of the leaderboard until 26-year-old Murphy, out in the final match from the first tee, ended a dismal run by going out in 32 with a birdie and an eagle-two at the eighth when he sank his approach shot.
Hurd, from Leeds, had six birdies and a bogey in his 67 while Hamerton, from Manchester, had an adventurous round that brought him eight birdies and three bogeys.
Brier, who can move into second place in the rankings if he can take the top prize on Sunday, continued his fine form with 67 while only a double-bogey at the 18th, his ninth, prevented Higgins from making it a four-way tie at the top.
