Sweden’s Pehr Magnebrant leads the Norwegian Open at Sorknes GC after an opening round of 68, four under par. The 28-year-old leads compatriot Joakim Rask, South Africa's Jean Hugo and the English duo of John Drummond and Darren Parker by one stroke.

Magnebrant, winner of the Open dei Tessali last season, has only made one top ten finish this year when he was joint seventh in the Neuchatel Open Golf Trophy and needs a good finish to the season if he is to challenge for a Tour card.

Rask, who held the number one spot in the Challenge Tour Rankings for much of the 1996 season before graduating to the main Tour, is back concentrating his efforts on the Challenge Tour and opened with a 69. He is joint second with Drummond, Hugo and Parker, back playing the Challenge Tour after a car crash on the eve of the Qualifying School Finals last November. Parker suffered broken ribs in the crash and, after withdrawing from the School, was also out of action for much of the early season.
