The Öhrlings Swedish Matchplay moves to a new venue at Kristianstads Golf Club this week with American Kevin Carrisimi defending the title.
Twelve months ago Carissimi kept the trophy in American hands when he beat Sweden’s Mathias Eliasson by a two and one margin at Varbergs Golf Club. A year earlier Greg Garbero, from Arizona, took the title when he beat New Zealand’s Elliot Boult in the final.
Carissimi won £6,497 with his victory but missed out on earning his European Tour card by the narrowest of margins when he finished 16th in the Challenge Tour Rankings, just one place outside the top 15 needed to graduate to the regular Tour. Indeed he was only knocked out of the top 15 when Jorge Berendt leapt ahead of him by winning the AXA Grand Final.
Among the leading challengers this week is Pehr Magnebrant, winner of the Norwegian Open two weeks ago. Per G Nyman, winner of the last event in Sweden – the NCC Open at Soderasens GC is another of the season’s champions in the starting line up while Klas Eriksson, who led after three rounds of the Scottish PGA Championship last week before finishing joint third, is another player on top of his game.
European Tour player Kalle Brink, a graduate of the 1998 European Tour Qualifying School, is back in action in his native Sweden for this Match Play event involving 74 players.
