When the protracted first round of the Gunther Hamburg Classics was completed in much more favourable conditions this morning, three more players joined Peter Hanson and Michael Archer at the top of the leaderboard.

Sweden’s Hanson and Archer from England went round in 66 yesterday before a thunderstorm followed by prolonged rain forced play to be abandoned for the day with half the field still on the course.

In sunshine and with a slight breeze this morning, Robert Jan Derksen from Holland duly finished the three holes he had left in level par to sign for a 66 and was later joined by Frenchman, Dominique Nouailhac.

Italy’s Francesco Guermani then made it five names on six under with another 66, while Sweden’s Klas Eriksson and Jamie Donaldson from Wales returned 67s to make it five players on five under.

The main drama of the concluding part of round one was the disqualification of Nicolas Colsaerts. The young Belgian signed for a wrong score, a five instead of a six on the fifth hole, so his 77 should have been 78.

When the opening round had been completed, 66 players were on two under or better, while 83 players were under par.
