Italy's Stefano Reale and Mattias Nilsson from Sweden share top spot in the clubhouse in the Terme Euganee International Open Padova in Italy, but they could be overtaken this morning.
On a day when the start of play was delayed for almost an hour-and-a-half because of fog, 40 players failed to complete their second rounds, and two, England's Simon Hurley and Philip Golding are level with Reale and Nilsson with three holes to play.
Reale, younger brother of European Tour regular Michele Reale and current leader of the Alps Tour Order of Merit, carded 66 and Nilsson 67 for 13 under par 131, a shot clear of another Swede, Johan Skold, who signed for 68.
Having celebrated his 20th birthday last month, Reale was out from the 10th tee and came home in 32 thanks to a run of five successive birdies from the fourth.
But England’s Hurley, who had a hole-in-one on Thursday on his way to an opening 65, is six under for his second round, while Golding has picked up seven strokes following his opening 66.
They will complete their rounds on Saturday morning and if one or both pick up further birdies they could edge clear at the top. Both could even equal the lowest rounds of the day, 64s from Chris Gane and Roger Beames.
Gane, from London, had eight birdies and came home in 31, while Scotland's Beames went out in 29 with an eagle and five birdies to record his lowest Challenge Tour return.
Another Italian, Federico Bisazza, lies fourth on 133 after a 65 which contained eight birdies, while left-hander Gane in joint fifth on 134, alongside fellow Londoner Gary Clark and another Swede, Bjorn Pettersson, both of whom signed for 68. Italy’s Silvio Grappasonni is still on the course on 10 under.
Beames is a stroke further back in equal eighth on nine under with England’s Richard Bland, Martin Erlandsson from Sweden, and Kariem Baraka from Germany. Magus Persson from Sweden is another with three to play and is eight under for the round and nine under overall.
The halfway cut looks like falling at four or five under par. Currently there are 46 players on four under or better.
