Walker Runs Away with Scottish Challenge title
England’s Sam Walker put the seal on a magnificent performance with a final round of six under par 65 to run away with the inaugural Scottish Challenge title, by six shots from Welshman Gareth Wright at Murcar Links Golf Club. Walker, who had registered four second place finishes on the European Challenge Tour before this maiden victory, proved himself unstoppable on Scotland’s north east coast and deservedly took home the €32,000 first prize.
Majestic Walker Gusts Through the Field to Lead in Scotland
England’s Sam Walker produced a majestic links golf performance to take control of the Scottish Challenge, carving out a quite unbelievable third round score of seven under par 64 amidst howling, gusting winds to move to 12 under 201 for the tournament and into a four shot lead from New Zealand’s Gareth Paddison and Welshman Gareth Wright.
Rampant Scots Dominate at Murcar
A rampant performance from Scotland’s golfers, that included two course records, ensured that the Scottish Challenge leaderboard had a particularly homely feel at the halfway stage, with five out of the top eight players representing the home of golf with distinction at Murcar Links Golf Club.
Eriksson’s Links Education Sees Him into the Lead at Murcar
Sweden’s Klas Eriksson took full advantage of his first class links golf education to take a two stroke lead at the inaugural Scottish Challenge. The 34 year old posted an excellent six under par 65 at the magnificent Murcar Links Golf Club on Scotland’s north east coast, and afterwards revealed that three month-long terms at one of links golf’s toughest schools, Carnoustie, had taught him all he needs to know to contend at this week’s €200,000 Challenge Tour event.
Hutcheon relishing the chance to compete on home turf
As a man who has suffered both ultimate joy and suffering on the European Challenge Tour, Aberdeen’s Greig Hutcheon is in a perfect position to preview this week’s €200,000 Scottish Challenge, to be played at Murcar Links Golf Club. Hutcheon, 33, has won and lost his place on The European Tour by the narrowest of margins via the Challenge Tour Rankings. He was elated when he won the last available Tour card by just €476 in 1999, but experienced the flip side of that joy two years later when he missed out by two places, with €1918 separating Hutcheon in 17th place and the man in 15th spot on the final Rankings.
Montgomerie and Lawrie Back New Challenge Tour Event in Scotland
Colin Montgomerie and Paul Lawrie have added their considerable support to the establishment of the first European Challenge Tour event to be staged in Scotland for 12 years, the Scottish Challenge, to be played at the magnificent Murcar Links Golf Club from July 6-9 2006. The €200,000 tournament, which will be funded in the main by EventScotland, has been conceived as a direct result of Scotland’s successful bid to host The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.
