While Sergio Garcia and José Maria Olazábal get down to the business of defending the Ryder Cup at The K Club, four of Spain’s future golf stars, all of whom have scored victories on the 2006 European Challenge Tour Schedule will looking to take full advantage of comfortable surroundings at this week’s OKI Mahou Challenge de España at the Centro Nacional de Golf in Madrid.
The Centro Nacional de Golf is home to the Spanish Golf Federation and it is a venue that Challenge Tour champions Rafael Cabrera Bello, Carlos Del Moral, Alvaro Quiros and Juan Parron know well, having trained at the venue when playing for the Spanish National Team.
All four young Spaniards have been in outstanding form this season, with Parron performing best of all to lie in third place on the current Challenge Tour Rankings with just four events of the season remaining.
Parron won his maiden Challenge Tour title in Madrid earlier in the year at Open Mahou de Madrid and has been one of the most consistent players of the year, racking up an additional four top five finishes and missing just one cut en route to winning €68,290 this season.
Cabrera Bello, at tenth on the Rankings, is the next best placed of the Spanish quartet. The 21 year old won the Man NÖ Open in Austria, while Quiros’s win at the Morson International Pro-Am Challenge has helped him to 11th place on the Rankings.
At 42nd on the Rankings, Del Moral has some work to do to join his three compatriots in the all important top 20 if he wants to secure his place on The 2007 European Tour, but if he can repeat the form that took him to the Texbond Open title at the Centro Nacional de Golf, he will find himself on the cusp of joining the likes of Garcia and Olazábal on The European Tour.
