As the penultimate event on the 2006 Schedule, the European Challenge Tour’s Golf Open International de Toulouse is set to be one of the most significant events of the season, where the elite 45 players who will contest the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final will be finalised.
The Grand Final is where the top 45 players determine who will take the 20 available places on The 2007 European Tour via the Challenge Tour Rankings, but, for the moment, the spotlight falls on the Golf de Toulouse-Seilh in southern France and those players who have yet to secure their places at the Grand Final.
Spain’s Carlos del Moral, winner of the 2006 Texbond Open, is one such player in that tantalising position going into this week’s €120,000 event.
The 25 year old is currently 49th on the Rankings and needs to find a big performance in Toulouse if he wants to extend his Challenge Tour season by playing in the Grand Final.
“I definitely need a good week,” confirmed del Moral. “I am in that position where I have to get to the Grand Final. At the start of the year my goal was to secure a full card on the Challenge Tour for next season and try to do well at the Qualifying School.
“I have done that and will have a good card on the Challenge Tour next season, which is great, but now that I have it I want more – we golfers are a selfish bunch, but you have to have that kind of attitude if you want to get to the top.
“This week will not be enjoyable though. There is a lot of pressure to play well and I just hope that I can do that because I have not played well for the last few weeks.”
While those players in and around 45th place on the Rankings will be under the most intense spotlight this week, there will be huge pressure on every man in the field as the Challenge Tour season draws to a close.
The players at the top of the Rankings will be desperate to consolidate their positions, while the players at the bottom are searching for that one priceless victory that could rejuvenate their year.
