Spaniard Jorge Campillo warmed up for the inaugural Gujarat Kensville Challenge in fine fashion when he led his team to victory in the Pro-Am, held at Kensville Golf and Country Club on Wednesday.

The 2011 European Challenge Tour season gets underway on Thursday at the 7,250-yard, par 72 course in Ahmedabad, India, which bears the signature of India’s most famous golfing son, Jeev Milkha Singh.

Campillo’s team finished with a ‘better ball’ score of 54, one shot lower than the team led by Chirag Kumar, with his compatriot Gaganjeet Bhullar leading his team to third place.

India’s Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan officially inaugurated the tournament with a tee shot which drew appreciative applause from players and spectators alike.

Jeev – who played the Pro-Am along alongside his father Milkha Singh, affectionately known as the “Flying Sikh” – withdrew from the tournament due a recurring back problem, thus dashing his hopes of winning on his home course.

Instead, it is Bhullar who will spearhead the home contingent, all of whom are bidding to become the first Indian to win on the Challenge Tour. The champion will walk away with a cheque for €32,000, whilst the runner-up will be richer by some €22,000.
