Swede Klas Eriksson soared into contention in the Fred Olsen Challenge de España with a stunning eight under par featuring seven birdies and an eagle.

A holed sand iron on the par five 13th for eagle was the highlight of the round but it was the five birdies on the front nine at Tecina Golf Club in La Gomera on the Canary Islands which laid the foundations as moved within one of the early clubhouse leader Christophe Brazillier.

Ericsson is currently 50th in the Challenge Tour Rankings with just the two top tens this year and needs a strong end to the season if he is to graduate as he did in 2008 and his 12 under par total for 36 holes has put him into a strong position going into the weekend.

“I played the front nine really, really well,” said the 40 year old from Växjö. “But I struggled on the back nine and got lucky on the 13th when I holed the sand wedge. I drove the ball excellently on the front nine and that made it easier and then putted well on the back nine so it was a good combination for a great round.”

Eriksson was one behind Brazillier, who followed his opening 62 with a four under par 67.

The 31 year old from Dijion, in a similar place on the Rankings in 54th place, also made an eagle, chipping in from the back of the third green. But his five birdies were countered by three bogeys.

“I played well but the course was very different with a change of wind,” he said. “It was not as easy as yesterday. It’s been a bit of a frustrating day so I am going to try to relax in the swimming pool and try to give it my best for the next two days.”
