After a difficult introduction to the professional ranks American Peter Uihlein is now starting to find his feet on the Challenge Tour, and the former World Amateur Number One continued his fine run of recent form with a flawless round of 64 on the opening day of the Rolex Trophy.

Having finished in the top 12 in his last four events Uihlein came into this week’s elite 42-man event in fine fettle, and the former US Amateur Champion promptly posted the lowest round of his fledgling professional career at Golf Club de Genève, in the Swiss capital.

The highlights of Uhlein’s round were his 25 feet birdie putts on the 16th and 17th holes, followed by another from closer range on the last to finish the day two shots off the lead held by Argentina’s Daniel Vancsik.

Uihlein said: “There were some really low scores this morning, so I knew I’d have to make a lot of birdies if I didn’t want to get left behind. I played well and could have gone lower, but also holed some long putts so overall it probably evened itself out. It’s a great tournament, I really enjoyed playing with the juniors today because it made for a nice, relaxed atmosphere out on the course.

“My form’s been pretty good lately, so it’s good to keep the run going. Obviously my confidence took a bit of a knock after I missed a few cuts on The European Tour, but I fought through it and have come through the other side. If Justin Rose struggled at the start of his pro career, I’m in pretty good company! I’m still only 22, so hopefully I’ve got a long and successful career ahead of me.”
