After a challenging start to his professional career, former World Amateur Number One Peter Uihlein believes he is now stronger for the experience and is sure that the European Challenge Tour is the perfect place to build his career.

The American has been on cracking form of late on the Challenge Tour, recording successive top ten finishes in his last four tournaments, making it an impressive seven top 20 finishes in his nine appearances on the tour after making his professional debut at the Gujarat Kensville Challenge in India in January.

That form has continued into the M2M Russian Challenge Cup this week as he enters the weekend’s play four shots off the lead in tied ninth place.

While that may paint a picture of a swift transition from the amateur game in which he excelled, making two Walker Cup appearances for the USA and winning the esteemed US Amateur Championship, 2012 has been far from a walk in the park for the Massachusetts man.

His first four appearances on The European Tour ended in disappointment, making only one cut at the Avantha Masters but finishing way down the field, and prompted him to take a three month break from the game.

Now, the 22 year old believes he has turned the corner and his results certainly reflect that belief.

In a revealing interview with, Uihlein said: “You want to come out and start beating the world right away and it just doesn’t happen like that. I thought I was ready but I wasn’t.

“I was able to go back for a few months and work on what I needed to work on. When I came back, I came out refreshed and with a different mind-set. I was happy to be out here, I was given a good opportunity and I have to make the most of it.

“Playing over here at the Challenge Tour, European Tour or even the Asian Tour, they’re all great tours and if you get the chance to play, it’s so much more beneficial to your game.

“I think you’ll see more and more Americans coming over here and trying to get an opportunity to play on some great tours.”
