Marek Novy plays his home tournament, the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open, this week as an invite but he will play on the Challenge Tour full time next year after he became the first Czech player to receive a category, having qualified through a satellite tour.

Novy finished in the top five on the satellite EPD Tour, making history in the process, and plays at Kunetická Hora Golf Club this week riding a wave of positivity.

It is a huge step for Czech golf after many years of effort and Novy is well aware that he is the leading light for golf in the country as he attempts to prove his worth on the Challenge Tour this week ahead of his Rookie season next year.

“It was a good year for me this year even though I did not win,” said Novy. “I had a second place finish and a fourth place finish and that was just about good enough to finish fifth in the EPD Tour Rankings.

“I’m happy to make that step up and hopefully I will have a good year next year on the Challenge Tour.

“I am the first player in Czech history to get a category so it has made me very proud. I’m happy that somebody has done it and even happier that I am the one!

“This week is a chance for the Czech players to do well because we know the course. We played a tournament here earlier this year so I hope we all have a good week and I hope I can get a good result.”

With five players from the Eastern European nation making it to Qualifying School Second Stage, Novy’s is not the only success story for Czech golf at the moment and he believes things will only get better from here.

“In the last three years there have been big improvements,” he said. “Lukas Tintera made it into Q-School Final Stage last year and four or five players every year have been making it to the second stage and we didn’t have that before.

“Our amateurs have better handicaps and they are getting good results at the top amateur events so I think it’s improving all the time and I hope that will continue.

“Of course, I hope I can be the first player on The European Tour, that’s what I’m here for. We will see next year.”
