As Mr Ron Burgundy might say… ”Stay classy San Domenico!” (courtesy of Eddie Pepperell).
17:00
Now, there’s really only one thing left to say, and it comes from a man who has spoken with great wisdom over the years…
17:00
All that’s left to say is a great big thank you to everyone who has supported the Challenge Tour this year, and all the season’s that have come before. And to our hosts this week, San Domenico Golf, thanks again for a wonderful week.
17:00
Good luck to all of our graduates, and we wish you the best of luck next year on The European Tour.
17:00
So there it is, some week, and a fitting finish to another fantastic season on The Challenge Tour. We hope you’ve enjoyed everything we’ve had to offer courtesy of Tournament Tracker this week, and make sure to follow the next set of up-and-comers next year when we do it all over again.
16:54
Challenge Tour says: RT @WinningGolfMind: Just read through @Challenge_Tour tweets how the Grand Final unfolded. Quality stuff and well done to all graduates ...
16:53
He started slowly, if not consistently, with just a single birdie going out at the seventh, but when he put a run together on the back nine with two in a row from both the tenth and 15th, he was tied for the lead with just a couple to go. Kofstad’s birdie at 17 would eventually prove the difference, but in the group ahead of the Norwegian Busby hung tough, rolling in a tense six foot par putt at the last to all but guarantee his place on The European Tour. Real clutch stuff from the man who entered the week at 45th on the ranking, last man in, and he leaves here having secured the 16th card. Top work from that man, great to see.
16:50
But on a more positive note, Justin Walter jumped from 23rd to 15th after a super 67 on Saturday saw him finish in a tie for fifth. Seve Benson also prospered in the final round, shooting 68 to finish alongside Walters, and jump from 28th to 20th spot on the ranking.
16:48
Phillip Archer finished 43rd this week and having started it at 17th on the ranking, fell down to 25th. It was a similar story for Daniel Vancsik who fell from 21st to 27th, while HP Bacher dropped from 19th to 24th.
16:48
First of all the negatives, it was a disappointing day for a few of the guys out there who just missed out having been in that top 21 at the start of the week…
16:45
But what about the rest of the ranking…?
16:45
All that was left was for Kofstad to make par down the last and hope Hansen did not have a three in his locker, and when the Dane missed from 15 feet for birdie the Norwegian had just four feet for par and the title, and in she popped. Clutch stuff from a clearly cool customer.
16:44
After a slow start for the man from Norway, with a solitary birdie at the third on his way out, he really caught fire on the back side, capitalising on Hansen’s double bogey at the 13th with a birdie of his own, clearly the major turning point of the tournament. That gave him a one shot advantage, having been two behind, and although Hansen did rally with a birdie at 15, Kofstad covered him off with one of his own on the penultimate hole.
16:44
For so long it had looked like Joachim B Hansen would be crowned the Grand Final and Challenge Tour king, but alas, his victory bandwagon came unstuck coming home to leave the door ajar for Espen Kofstad to walk through and take the spoils.
16:43
So there you have it, what a week…
16:37
Challenge Tour says: Well what does all that mean for the @Challenge_Tour ranking? Ask & you shall receive... #GrandFinal http://t.co/ylzHsqCH
16:11
Challenge Tour says: Trophy time... #GrandFinal http://t.co/wHuQprdZ
15:56
Faced with a tricky up and down at the last from just short, Kofstad clipped up a delightful effort to around five feet, and when Hansen missed his birdie putt from 15 feet down the left side, it left Kofstad his for glory. And how glorious it was, rolling it straight in the centre to take all the plaudits.
15:53
Challenge Tour says: That winning feeling, Espen Kofstad is your champion! Well played sir #GrandFinal http://t.co/ieePR83x
15:51
Espen Kofstad is your Apulia San Domenico Grand Final Champion and Challenge Tour Number One for 2012.
15:42
Hansen centre cut and pushes a mid iron to 15 feet short of the flag at 18, while Kofstad from the left semi comes up comfortably short of the green. Tight.
15:37
FIST PUMP ALERT: Busby holes from six feet for par at the last, and he's got chances if Kofstad makes any mistakes.
15:36
Espen Kofstad is your leader after a clutch birdie at 17, pouring it in from close range to apply the pressure, but Hansen could not reply in kind. They are heading down the last with all the marbles here to play for...
15:30
Challenge Tour says: Danes out in force for Hansen at 17, both he & Kofstad have 8ft for birdie #GrandFinal http://t.co/27nGMS09
15:26
Busby way right at 18...
15:21
Kofstad misses from six feet at 16 after a gargantuan drive to register another par, but Hansen can't do any better, falling for birdie from a little outside ten feet.
15:18
James Busby with two in a row from 15 to you're at 18 under.
15:08
Much needed birdie for Hansen at 15 as Kofstad makes par. We're all tied at the top once more. With both having found the rough down the right Kofstad pushed his second right and failed to get up and down from the trap. Meanwhile Hansen came up just short, hit a tidy chip, and made his bird from seven feet.
15:02
Meanwhile eagle for De La Riva at 15, and with him right on the bubble of graduation, it was very timely.
15:00
Challenge Tour says: Plenty of Danish support out here for Hansen at 15, including the players. Top commeraderie from the Danes #GrandFinal
14:53
Pars at 14 and Kofstad still leads by 1 as they head down par five 15th. Big hole, we mean BIG hole...
14:43
Challenge Tour says: Time to follow the leader, leader, leader. Taking Tournament Tracker to course for final 4. Follow here... #GrandFinal http://t.co/7RBANRzj
14:40
WOWSERS! Double bogey, you what?! Joachim B Hansen has found some real trouble at 13 as playing partner Kofstad makes birdie. Three shot swing, yes that’s right, three shot swing. Kofstad leads by one and will win the rankings at this rate.
14:40
Challenge Tour says: Raymond Russell making late charge - 4 birdies in last 5 - provisonally 19th on rankings as they stand #GrandFinal
14:29
Par for Hansen at 12, still two clear.
14:28
Bogey for De La Riva and it sends him three strokes back and looking like falling out of the provisional top 21 as it stands by just a single place.
14:23
Kofstad with a timely two at 12, come to think of it, is there any such thing as an untimely 2? Any road up, it gets the Norwegian to within two of his fellow Scandinavian with just 6 holes to go…
14:13
Them boys have been eating up the par five 11th all day, it’s down wind don’t you know, and Hansen is no different posting a four of his own to pull three clear. The Dane’s victory bandwagon really is gathering pace…
14:09
Challenge Tour says: RT \"@jbw1985: @buzza1982 would T2 w/ 1 other be enough for card?\" > 2nd on own almost certain, poss T2 w/ 1 other #GrandFinal
14:09
Eddie Pepperell also in the house after an awesome closing 65 to tie for fifth as it stands, and as a result, he looks like he’s going to be playing European Tour golf next year. Well played son.
14:03
And what of Andreas Harto who was dropping some mad skills in a front nine of 27, seven under par, but he cooled off a lot on the back nine to post a round of eight under 63 to climb to 13 under and into a tie for fifth.
13:49
Steady as he goes for Hansen at ten, pars don't come any more regulation than that. Playing into a stiffening breeze to a pin tucked front right, and the water looming short, Hansen split the narrow fairway before dispatching an iron a little left but perfectly pin high. His putt missed, just, on the left side, but he maintains his two shot lead over Kofstad, who also made a solid four.
13:29
"EURGH!" - The noise of Hansen as he taps in for bogey at 9 having failed to get up and down from the left rough. In fact none of this final threesome managed to hit the green in regulation, and only Kofstad managed top get up and down, playing a delightful pitch from short left of the surface. As a result Kofstad is now only two back of Hansen.
13:21
De Le Riva's run halted with bogey at 9, as Hansen pars the long par three eighth. Three shot lead for the seemingly dominant Dane.
13:09
Things getting a lot better for Eddie Pepperell out there too, having got off to a fine start with birdies at two and four, he has now come fresh off another two in a row at 13 and 14 to follow one at 11 and he’s now back at minus 12, in a tie for sixth place. He came into the week at 18 on the rankings, but with a performance like that, he looks almost certain of a spot in the top 21.
13:04
Another birdie for Hansen at the par five seventh and he’s two clear at nineteen under, except now it is De La Riva who is his nearest challenger, not Kofstad, after the Spaniard made two in a row from the seventh to get within two. Looking like a three horse race now, although James Busby has also just birdied seven to get within five, but it is looking like he might just have too much to do. Will need some serious birdies on the backside and hope for some help from Hansen.
12:37
It is looking like a three horse race out there right now, with Hansen holding firm at 18 under par, two clear of playing partner Kofstad, and a further shot ahead of Eduardo De La Riva, who is in desperate need of a top finish to make the top 21, and he’s doing just that. Pressure play from the Spaniard.
12:31
And just like buses, you sing the praises of ‘Wakey’ for posting two eagles in one day, and along comes another sharp shooter in the form of Alexandre Kaleka with two of his own, this time at the 11th and 15th.
12:22
Simon ‘Wakey’ Wakefield posting a rare bird at the seventh, we’re of course talking eagles, and then he goes and does the same at 11. Both par fives, so that kind of thing can happen, but two in a round really is quite delightful. Well played sir.
12:16
Meanwhile, in the final group, Joachim B Hansen has made it back-to-back birdies after a fine effort at four having rolled in a 15 footer down the slope for a delightful deuce. Kofstad was unable to match his playing partner’s efforts, but will settle for his par, while Crespi really is struggling in these conditions. It might be that you get a little less of this where he’s from, those Scandinavian boys are brought up in the wet and wild.
