Internationally acclaimed for its natural beauty, character and stern test of golf, Foshan’s flagship championship course has become a welcome modern new attribute to the city’s far-reaching fame as the cradle of Cantonese culture which spawned its own distinctive traditions such as opera, kung fu, lion dancing and dragon boat racing. Now one of China’s thriving, modern cities, Foshan is poised to become a key part of the ambitious Greater Bay Area initiative which will integrate the 11 cities of the Pearl River Delta into one mega economic cluster of 60 million people. Foshan GC is in the enviable position of being extremely well located to benefit from this massive and exciting initiative.

Tony Cashmore, the highly experienced Australian course designer, had the vision to preserve and, where possible, enhance the outstanding natural beauty and wildlife of the land for the golf course. So he put a strong focus on planting native grasses and shrubs, thereby creating a course that blends perfectly with its surroundings and flows naturally through the wooded hills and valleys dotted with ponds and streams.  The result is a natural series of highly testing golfing challenges that demand both good shot making and course management to navigate the 18 holes.

The course is also one of the few in China that has won awards for its work on environmental sustainability, recycling water and encouraging native pond life being two examples from a range of initiatives in operation.

As with the great courses of the world, Foshan has its memorable groups of holes each with their own special character. The corner featuring the 4th to 7th holes is quite different from the rising and plunging slopes of the 10th and 11th holes. The long loop of 12th to 15th holes is different again.

Perhaps, fittingly, it is the final hole that has seen most drama and swings of fortune.  Guarded by a large lake and with a putting surface sloping ominously toward the lake, many have ruined their chances by gambling on hitting a perfect shot or putt only to come up short. Adding to the drama are the natural slopes behind the hole that can accommodate several thousand spectators and have become a favourite viewing spot during the Foshan Open.
