DESERT DELIGHT FOR PING PROFESSIONALS

Leading golf equipment manufacturer, PING enjoyed a triumphant weekend at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, with fellow PING pro’s, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Lee Westwood battling it out in a dramatic playoff at the final event of the European Tour’s Desert Swing.

After a nail biting final day at the Emirates Golf Club, Jiménez courageously edged out European Number One Westwood at the third play-off hole to claim his 16th European Tour victory and move to 4th in The Race to Dubai rankings.

Despite the disappointment at finishing runner-up, Westwood still had plenty to smile about as he moved to 5th in The Race top Dubai standings and cemented his place at 4th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Luke Donald signs new club deal with Mizuno

Luke Donald extended a long standing equipment relationship by signing a new multi-year agreement with Japanese manufacturer Mizuno. The contract is Luke Donald’s third with Mizuno, ensuring he enters his prime competitive years with the equipment brand used since his amateur days.

After a successful recovery from a wrist injury last season, Donald took some time to evaluate all aspects of his game and made some changes, including bringing in a new caddy, having previously partnered exclusively with his brother Christian. However, the changes did not extend to the equipment that Donald has come to rely upon as an important part of his formula for success.

Donald will continue to play Mizuno MP-62 irons, MP T-10 Series wedges, and Mizuno CLK hybrid - carried in the famous blue and white Mizuno Staff Bag.

Chris Wood commits to Mizuno

Mizuno announced today that a period of iron testing with English talent Chris Wood has developed into a long term equipment agreement. The 2009 PGA European Tour Rookie of the year has signed a multi year agreement to play the Japanese manufacturer’s renowned Forged irons.

Twenty-two year old Wood turned professional after finishing joint 5th at the 2008 Open Championship and is regarded as one the game’s finest young talents. In a short professional career Wood has risen into the world’s top 100 rankings and came within a shot of a playoff for the 2009 Open Championship.

Since turning professional Wood has remained independent from any equipment commitments, preferring a free choice of equipment. Andy Kikidas, European Mizuno Tour Operations Manager commented, “It was important that Chris Wood was comfortable playing our irons before we discussed a contract.

TaylorMade Introduces TP xFT Wedge (Exchangeable Face Technology)

TaylorMade Golf has introduced the TP wedge with xFT (Exchangeable Face Technology), which allows players to easily remove a worn clubface and replace it with a new one to maintain peak performance in terms of spin and control.

"Though the face of a typical iron is sturdy, it isn't impervious to wear," said Bret Wahl, senior director of iron, wedge and putter development. "A wedge's face wears from contact with the ball and from the dirt and sand that's often sandwiched between the ball and the face at impact. Every time you explode from sand with your wedge it's like rubbing a piece of sand paper on your clubface. Over time the face wears down and the edge-radius of the grooves becomes dull. In addition to the normal wear and tear a face suffers from normal play, it can be nicked and damaged in a variety of other ways such as when clubheads bang together when you put your bag down or when you walk or drive your cart..."

TOP PAIRING FOR FOOTJOY IN HONG KONG

FootJoy ambassadors Gregory Bourdy and Rory McIlroy take top two spots in penultimate event of 2009

FootJoy, the #1 Shoe and Glove in Golf, is delighted to announce that Gregory Bourdy won the UBS Hong Kong open after holding off a late charge by Rory McIlroy on Sunday afternoon. Bourdy, who clinched the title by an eventual two stroke margin, was in inspired form on the greens all week. McIlroy, who was left to rue a three putt bogey on the 17th green goes into this week on top of the Race to Dubai rankings and looks set to become the youngest ever European Tour order of merit winner and the first Race to Dubai champion.

This week’s wins have added to the impressive tally of recent FootJoy winners.

BOURDY CLAIMS HONG KONG OPEN IN 1-2 FINISH FOR TITLEIST FULL LINE PLAYERS

Titleist Ambassadors Gregory Bourdy and Rory McIlroy trust Titleist equipment from tee to green to top the leaderboard in Asia

Gregory Bourdy captured his third European Tour title at the Hong Kong Golf Club shooting a final round 3-under par 67 to hold off fellow full line Titleist player Rory McIlroy by two shots. Bourdy’s 19-under par total of 261 was enough to hold off a weekend surge from McIlroy, who fired weekend rounds of 65 and 64 to finish in second place on 17-under par. McIlroy’s third top five finish in three weeks raises him to the top of the inaugural Race to Dubai rankings going into the Dubai World Championships while Bourdy’s victory sees him climb into the top-60 of the rankings and also claim his place at the season ending event.

Bourdy trusted the superior feel of Titleist from tee to green for his victory...

Workshop Diary: November 13th 2009

Feeling groovy everyone? Not us. We’ve been given quite a few headaches by the R & A and the USGA over the new groove rulings.

There’s been very little time to develop and manufacture new – or conforming – models to comply with the new rules. That’s involved huge costs at a time when companies are really looking to cut back rather than spend a fortune on a whim by the two governing bodies. One of the shaft companies told me they’d spent well over a million dollars sending out shafts for use with new heads – all for a golfing minority.

Anyway, thought I’d run the rule over it all, as it were, so the new changes may appear clearer, and explain what difference it might make to players when they come into force in January.

FISHER AND TITLEIST ON TOP OF THE WORLD

Titleist brand ambassador captures the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

Titleist Brand Ambassador Ross Fisher captured his biggest career victory to date with an immaculate display of consistent precision golf around the testing Finca Cortesin course in Spain. The win came on Fisher’s 126th hole of the week where a par 4 saw him capture the win that had so far eluded him during a season of great performances.. Following strong finishes at the US Open and The Open Championship, Fisher has elevated himself to fourth on the inaugural Race to Dubai rankings and 17th position in the Official World Golf Rankings following this week’s win. Fisher captured the Volvo World Match Play Championship, with a 4&3 margin of victory over Anthony Kim in the final match. The 28-year old Englishman had previously edged out Masters champion Angel Cabrera (Pro V1x) on the third extra hole of his semi final to setup a showdown with Kim...

Cobra Ambassador Ian Poulter goes wire-to-wire to win the 2009 Barclays Singapore Open

Cobra Brand Ambassador Ian Poulter secured an impressive wire-to-wire victory at the Sentosa Golf & Country Club in Singapore this week. The colourful Englishman topped a world class field with a determined display of power and precision around the testing Sentosa course. After a rain delayed third round, Poulter closed with a one-over par 72 to finish at 10-under 274. After briefly giving up the lead on the 11th hole to Ryder Cup compatriot Graeme McDowell, Poulter sank a 30 foot putt just two holes later on the 13th to regain his position at the top of the leaderboard. Following a delicate up and down from the sand on the 17th, Poulter maintained his confidence on the 18th with a solid par to claim his eighth European Tour title with a one shot victory over China's Liang Wen-chong.

Ogilvy outlasted a world class field to capture the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship for the second time, taking his World Golf Championship victory tally to three. The 2006 Champion and 2007 runner up was matched against Paul Casey in the 36 hole final, who struggled to keep pace with Ogilvy’s impressive combination of power, control and precision. Ogilvy who played superb golf all week can now also boast the tag as the only multiple winner of 2009 so far following his wire to wire win at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii in January.

Michael Jonzon's Improbable Victory at Castello Masters

Facing the most daunting of ultimatums — finish in the top two or fail to secure your European Tour card for 2010 — TaylorMade-adidas Tour Staff Professional Michael Jonzon came alive at the Castello Masters, determined to make his playing status for next year a certainty by Sunday evening. Ranked 482nd in the world and winless for 12 years running, Jonzon raced to an opening-round 64 and fought off a late charge from the field, needing a birdie on the final hole to close with 67 and edge his way to an improbable one-shot victory.

Desperate to avoid his ninth trip to qualifying school in 16 years on Tour, the 37-year-old Swede took home the hard-earned championship prize of €333,330 after an emotional and exciting final round at Club de Campo del Mediterraneo. Among those chasing Jonzon were fellow TaylorMade staffers Martin Kaymer, who finished in 2nd place in his first start since returing from injury.

Workshop Diary: October 26th 2009

The end of the European Tour season has really come around quickly and for the Workshop at least we only have the Volvo World Matchplay and the Tour School to left to cover

This week the Tour has been in Valencia for the Castello Masters (Garcia’s event) and the workshop has been pretty busy. At this time of year a lot of players are starting to look around for contracts for next season and we’ve had a few players in to try out our latest kit. I can’t give you the names (unfortunately) - but I can tell you about their reaction to the new kit.

New Mizuno Products

Visitors to various golf forums will have seen the first sneak pictures of Mizuno's new iron models as far back as June.

However, the Mizuno site has held back releasing official pictures until the models became available - which is this week.

Left handers will be delighted to hear that the MP-68 will be available to them - filling the one black spot in Mizuno's line up. MX fans might be surprised to see Mizuno scale its dimensions with the MX-300 - an iron with the lines to catch the attention of our tour pros and better players.

Mizuno Workshop Diary

The Open is one time of year when we get to work with Mizuno US’s Tour players.

We thought Jonathan Byrd had qualified as well – a shame he didn’t make it with a game like that. But Jeff Overton, Brian Gay and Luke Donald are all players who could do damage at Turnberry.

Jeff Overton – great to watch him on the practice ground working on his driver trajectory for different wind conditions. Teeing it low for shots into the wind, he’s capable of producing very little spin but obviously has the ball speed to keep it in the air. For the shots down wind, and to obviously maximise distance, he tees it up higher and catches it more on the up for a higher launch to carry the wind.

Brian Gay – He came to Europe following his 2 wins in America this year...

Back-to-Back: Kaymer Captures Barclay's Scottish Open

Rising European Tour star earns second straight win; moves to No. 11 in Official World Golf Rankings.

Martin Kaymer became the first player in 19 years to enter Open Championship week following back-to-back wins on the European Tour, carding a final-round 69 to capture the Barclay's Scottish Open and capitalise on the momentum of his win at the Open de France ALSTOM.

The victory, already the fourth on the European Tour for the 24-year-old Kaymer, puts him within a fraction of a point of cracking the top-10 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He will contend for an improbable third straight victory at the 2009 Open Championship starting Thursday at Turnberry.

Martin Kaymer wins Open de France Alstom

Martin Kaymer, who last month committed to joining the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Tour Staff in 2010, captured the Open de France ALSTOM in a playoff yesterday.

The victory, Kaymer's third on the European Tour, elevated him to 19th in the Official World Golf Rankings. One of the European Tour's rising stars, Kaymer was named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year for 2007, then won twice in 2008; the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and the BMW International Open.

"This is precisely why we wanted Martin on our Tour Staff," said Chuck Presto, TaylorMade-adidas Golf's senior vice president of sports marketing. "He's a great competitor who knows how to win. We're looking forward to helping him reach his full potential as a tour professional."

Martin Kaymer Joins TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Company

TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company announced today that former BMW International Open winner Martin Kaymer has joined the company's Tour Staff and is committed to playing a full complement of TaylorMade equipment, including a TaylorMade golf ball, by the start of 2010.

Workshop Diary: April 7th 2009

As the rock group Canned Heat famously once observed we are Back on the Road Again. Back in the thick of it, and it’s been a surprising start to 2009. I’m talking about our new woods, the MX-700’s. It’s good to have a ‘bonus’ product for the tour that we didn’t see coming.

We’d had a fairly long winter after finishing at tour school last November, making a few upgrades to the workshop, carrying out some refurbishments, installing a couple of new machines. We were then ready to go for the Andalucia Open, our first event this season with the workshop. Obviously the guys had played a number of events leading up to that and to help them we’d carried out what we call ‘off-season’ duties, when the workshop isn’t on tour. But then it was the real thing.

First we welcomed a couple of new players this year.

The victory sees Kjeldsen break into the top 15 in the Race to Dubai, puts him just outside the top 40 in the world and earns him his debut at the Masters Tournament

The extensive marketing initiatives implemented by the Scottish based company continue to help contrast recent reports which signalled a general slowdown in the golf industry.

Glenmuir's greater emphasis on a sport-technical look for 2009 was given massive exposure in the Ryder Cup, as Nick Faldo's European Team wore the company's Performance Shirts - featuring the moisture-wicking Coolmax ® fabric.

Workshop Diary: July 28th 2008

Well that’s another Open Championship under our belts. It was a memorable week for Greg Norman and we played our little part with the Great White Shark.

Little did we know when he came in for a few grip changes that, at 53 years old, Greg was going to come so close to winning at Royal Birkdale. He looks fit as a fiddle, despite his years, and very strong. His irons are amazing for a veteran. He uses a set of blades that have some of the narrowest sole widths I've ever seen on a set of irons - completely the other end of the scale to, for instance, Colin Montgomerie's.

The average amateur would struggle to even get Norman's irons airborne but with his high launching swing and the way he generates such high levels of backspin they are perfect for his swing-level. And perfect for Royal Birkdale in a week when a lot of his juniors got blown away.

Shark Lights Up The Game

A 53-year-old Australian lit up a wet and windy Open and went on to show the crowds his inimitable class at Troon - and he did it in style.

Previously winning the Open in 1986 and 1993, Greg Norman at his best could play links golf as well as anyone in the history of the game, and in the last two weeks he has shown us that enough of his game and vitality remains to allow him to seriously compete, despite nowadays rarely playing tournament golf.

Walking tall and receiving standing ovations across the course, day after day, Greg Norman is a heroic and distinctive icon and his warmth of spirit and fair play was paid tribute to by Open winner Padraig Harrington when he went on to finally raise the claret jug.

CLEVELAND GOLF LAUNCHES INVITATIONAL EVENT AT THE OLD HEAD GOLF LINKS, IRELAND TO GREAT ACCLAIM.

IT TOOK a three-way play-off to decide the winner of the inaugural Cleveland Golf invitational – an event made all the more challenging thanks to the driving rain and gale force winds.

Forty-two teams – each made up of a club pro that stocks the brand, and an amateur from that club – made the trip to exclusive Irish course Old Head for the event, held on 21 – 22 June 2008.

Designed to enhance Cleveland’s relationship with key customers, the invitational was split into two competitions – an 18 hole stroke play competition for the pros and a better ball, best score pairs competition.

FISHER CONQUERS THE ELEMENTS TO WIN IN STYLE WITH FOOTJOY

FootJoy ambassador Ross Fisher overcomes adverse weather conditions to claim majestic victory at The European Open

Ross Fisher not only had to contend with a world class field at the London Club this week but also rapidly changing playing conditions. With the help of FootJoy, the #1 Shoe and Glove in Golf, the young Englishman performed with style and skill to destroy the field and win by an incredible seven shots to take the European Open title. From the hard, fast links-like conditions on Thursday to the wind and torrential downpours of the final day on Sunday, Fisher coped considerably better than the rest to outscore a strong line-up of Europe’s finest golfers.

Fisher recorded a course record 63 on Thursday and then followed that with three more rounds in the 60’s to register a 20-under par total.

Mizuno Workshop Diary

You'll never be able to accuse Mizuno of resting on its laurels.

The company is always striving for perfection and, sure enough, we’ve got two exciting innovations to talk about.

For the last couple of weeks we’ve been testing prototypes. There’s a certain amount of detail I can’t go into – but I can give a little bit away. That’s because some of the players have them in their bags now.

We’ve got some new wedges. They are actually the ‘R’ Series and the ‘T’Series but we’ve put a completely new finish on them - a painted black matt finish which exposes the grooves. We’ve had a great response which has seen quite a few of our guys get back into our wedges.

SINGH WHEN YOU’RE WINNING

Singh wore the FootJoy DryJoys featuring PODS technology in black smooth waterproof leather and platinum TPU saddle all week, giving him the comfort and confidence to fire a closing round of 71 to win with a 3 round total of 198, 15 under par to edge out the field at the weather affected event.

Singh’s victory continues the trend of FootJoy wearers winning this year.

Cabrera carries PING to U.S. Open victory

Battling the world’s number one player and what many called the toughest course in U.S. Open history, PING pro Angel Cabrera outlasted both in claiming the U.S. Open for his first major championship. The Argentine’s 5-over-par total at Oakmont Country Club came on the strength of a final round 69—one of only eight under-par rounds on the week—that earned him a 1-shot victory worth $1.2 million.

With opening and closing rounds of 69, the 37-year-old was the only player in the field to card two rounds under par. He entered the final round four shots off the pace but seized a share of the lead with three birdies on the front nine. He added two more birdies on the back nine that carried him to his victory.

“Today, I’m proud to say, Greg Norman Collection is the global leader in golf-inspired sportswear that combines performance, luxury and style.”

Greg Norman Collection is certainly one of the best golf clothing labels in the world today, combining superb colour and fit with exceptional performance across a diverse range of garments. HARRINGTON CLAIMS DUNHILL VICTORY

Padraig Harrington secured his 10th European Tour career title with success in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.

Harrington carded a final round of 68 at the Old Course to wrap up a five-shot victory. The first prize of £427,441 lifts the Irishman into second on the Order of Merit, £147,900 behind Paul Casey with two events remaining. Casey closed with a 68 for a share of sixth place.

Harrington began the final round a shot behind Welshman Bradley Dredge but immediately wiped out that deficit with a birdie on the first. Dredge went back in front with a birdie on the fifth after a superb long bunker shot from an awkward stance but Harrington pegged him back again on the ninth. The key hole for Harrington was the 11th where Dredge found the bunker off the tee and was forced to play out backwards on his way to a double-bogey five, while Harrington holed from 10 feet for a birdie two.
