Workshop Diary: November 13th 2009 Feeling groovy everyone? Not us. We’ve been given quite a few headaches by the R & A and the USGA over the new groove rulings. There’s been very little time to develop and manufacture new – or conforming – models to comply with the new rules. That’s involved huge costs at a time when companies are really looking to cut back rather than spend a fortune on a whim by the two governing bodies. One of the shaft companies told me they’d spent well over a million dollars sending out shafts for use with new heads – all for a golfing minority. Anyway, thought I’d run the rule over it all, as it were, so the new changes may appear clearer, and explain what difference it might make to players when they come into force in January. |

Workshop Diary: October 26th 2009 The end of the European Tour season has really come around quickly and for the Workshop at least we only have the Volvo World Matchplay and the Tour School to left to cover This week the Tour has been in Valencia for the Castello Masters (Garcia’s event) and the workshop has been pretty busy. At this time of year a lot of players are starting to look around for contracts for next season and we’ve had a few players in to try out our latest kit. I can’t give you the names (unfortunately) - but I can tell you about their reaction to the new kit. |

New Mizuno Products Visitors to various golf forums will have seen the first sneak pictures of Mizuno's new iron models as far back as June. However, the Mizuno site has held back releasing official pictures until the models became available - which is this week. Left handers will be delighted to hear that the MP-68 will be available to them - filling the one black spot in Mizuno's line up. MX fans might be surprised to see Mizuno scale its dimensions with the MX-300 - an iron with the lines to catch the attention of our tour pros and better players. The HOT METAL concept so impressive in the MX-700 has been expanded into the new MP Fli-Hi and MX-1000. |

Mizuno Workshop Diary The Open is one time of year when we get to work with Mizuno US’s Tour players. We thought Jonathan Byrd had qualified as well – a shame he didn’t make it with a game like that. But Jeff Overton, Brian Gay and Luke Donald are all players who could do damage at Turnberry. Jeff Overton – great to watch him on the practice ground working on his driver trajectory for different wind conditions. Teeing it low for shots into the wind, he’s capable of producing very little spin but obviously has the ball speed to keep it in the air. For the shots down wind, and to obviously maximise distance, he tees it up higher and catches it more on the up for a higher launch to carry the wind. Brian Gay – He came to Europe following his 2 wins in America this year... |

Workshop Diary: May 27th 2009 Spring is well under way and never more so than for Mizuno. There was a real spring in the step of everyone at Wentworth as soon as we opened the doors of the workshop. All the buzz at Wentworth was about our new prototypes. Tour professionals are amazing, though. Just a fortnight after his overwhelming victory in Italy, Danny Vancsik was one of the first in the workshop – looking to put a new set of irons into his bag! Understandable, I suppose. He’d found out about our brand-new set of blades – so new we haven’t decided on a model number for them yet. |

Workshop Diary: April 7th 2009 As the rock group Canned Heat famously once observed we are Back on the Road Again. Back in the thick of it, and it’s been a surprising start to 2009. I’m talking about our new woods, the MX-700’s. It’s good to have a ‘bonus’ product for the tour that we didn’t see coming. We’d had a fairly long winter after finishing at tour school last November, making a few upgrades to the workshop, carrying out some refurbishments, installing a couple of new machines. We were then ready to go for the Andalucia Open, our first event this season with the workshop. Obviously the guys had played a number of events leading up to that and to help them we’d carried out what we call ‘off-season’ duties, when the workshop isn’t on tour. But then it was the real thing. First we welcomed a couple of new players this year. |

GOLF DIGEST TESTS THE MX-700 The Hot Metal MX-700 Ti 9 Driver made its mark with the golfing press in the first few days of its release. Following an unveiling at the Orlando PGA Golf show on Jan 28, the reviews have been red hot. Golf Digest found that the Ti9 face allowed MX-700 driver to generate BOTH the highest launch angle and lowest backspin rate of all the drivers tested in its coveted 2009 HOT LIST. With a launch angle graded at 12/13 and a spin rate of just 3/13, the MX-700 driver laid waste to every other driver tested. Mizuno’s Global R&D Manager David Llewellyn believes this launch / spin combination is the holy grail of any driver. “It’s very hard to combine a high launch angle with a low spin rate – but it’s unquestionably the way to produce the longest drives. Every manufacturer in the market is trying to find the best way to get this combination." |

MP-52 DUAL MUSCLE Pocket Cavity The tour profiled MP-52 integrates a discreet pocket cavity for an uncompromising balance of shot-making and forgiveness. Twin crescents milled into the MP-52 deepen its C.O.G* - increasing stability from off centre hits, while remaining hidden at address. A central impact bar and secondary muscle pad (DUAL MUSCLE) ensures that feel and feedback are tuned to meet professional expectations. |

MP-62 Tour-Ready DUAL MUSCLE The MP-62 is a Tour Ready design based on the most requested adjustments and prototypes from Mizuno’s Tour Workshops. Minimal offset and a versatile soleplate inspired by Luke Donald’s personal grind ensures crisp ball striking, while the centrally located COG* and consistent sweet spot height dictates a neutral left / right bias. The Tour Ready profile is complemented by Dual Muscle’s enhanced feel, developed following research into vibration and frequency analysis. |

MX-200 Y-TUNE forgiveness. One piece forged feel. The MX-200 takes Grain Flow Forged forgiveness a quantum leap forward with the introduction of Y-Tune. A deep pocket cavity, milled to preserve MX-200’s one piece feel is complemented by a Y shaped reinforcement pad, extending a 5% larger sweet area* into a toe orientated position - matching the miss hit patterns of amateur golfers. Enhanced solidity in the hitting area and an aggressive triple cut sole design ensures MX-200’s place in the bags of both professionals and amateurs alike. |

MX-100 Extreme Y-TUNE Forgiveness MX-100 combines Y-Tune performance with an ultra pocket cavity design for the ultimate in iron forgiveness and ease of play. A re-engineered ultra pocket cavity pushes the MX-100’s COG low and deep for a high ball flight. A massive effective hitting area delivers unwavering stability on off centre strikes. Y-Tune’s cavity pad extends the MX-100’s vast sweet area higher into the toe area to match the miss hit patterns of amateur golfers for staggering consistency. The MX-100 ladies model features re-engineered 5 degree loft gaps to suit slower swing speeds and an additional Ladies Lite shaft. |

Workshop Diary: July 28th 2008 Well that’s another Open Championship under our belts. It was a memorable week for Greg Norman and we played our little part with the Great White Shark. Little did we know when he came in for a few grip changes that, at 53 years old, Greg was going to come so close to winning at Royal Birkdale. He looks fit as a fiddle, despite his years, and very strong. His irons are amazing for a veteran. He uses a set of blades that have some of the narrowest sole widths I've ever seen on a set of irons - completely the other end of the scale to, for instance, Colin Montgomerie's. The average amateur would struggle to even get Norman's irons airborne but with his high launching swing and the way he generates such high levels of backspin they are perfect for his swing-level. And perfect for Royal Birkdale in a week when a lot of his juniors got blown away. |

Mizuno Workshop Diary You'll never be able to accuse Mizuno of resting on its laurels. The company is always striving for perfection and, sure enough, we’ve got two exciting innovations to talk about. For the last couple of weeks we’ve been testing prototypes. There’s a certain amount of detail I can’t go into – but I can give a little bit away. That’s because some of the players have them in their bags now. We’ve got some new wedges. They are actually the ‘R’ Series and the ‘T’Series but we’ve put a completely new finish on them - a painted black matt finish which exposes the grooves. We’ve had a great response which has seen quite a few of our guys get back into our wedges. |

MX-560 DRIVER BRINGS MIZUNO BACK WITH A BANG High MOI Forgiveness without loss of distance Mizuno's highly anticipated re-entry into the driver market is topped with the announcement of a second new model – the MX-560™. Unlike its more sophisticated cousin the MP-600™, the MX-560™ is an unapologetic monster of a straight distance driver. Mizuno's R&D team discovered that the geometry of previous square and geometrically influenced drivers sacrificed distance in their quest for maximum MOI (resistance to twisting). A study of geometry proved that an optimal design could both maximize up/down and toe/heel MOI without a reduction in ball speeds and driving distance. A CNC milled plasma welded CORTECH™ face delivering the maximum R&A / USGA allowable energy transfer enhances MX-560's distance further still. |

NEW F-60 STEEL FAIRWAY WOODS Steel / Titanium combination perfectly suited to fairway performance The Mizuno F-60™ fairway woods produce an effortlessly powerful ball flight, attainable through the combination of an ultra-lightweight titanium crown and stainless steel body. Previously difficult to bond, the titanium crown is affixed to the high-tech precision stainless steel face and body through a patented new brazing process. The brazing process which uses a 3rd material to bond the two metals allows weight to be positioned very low in the clubhead. The technology replaces Mizuno's previous graphite crown / steel body combination which required a heavier bonding material. |

MIZUNO BETTINARDI C-SERIES PUTTERS “The four heads in this range feature a heel-toe shape and have a satin pearl finish – we wanted to achieve a classic look with this one. They are made out of soft carbon steel, a nice material to work with. The feel is still soft, yet the metal gives a solid click sound. During the design stage I spent some time working with tour players who told me they wanted to hear the ball come off the face a bit more. There are two standard lengths (34 and 35in), the shorter putter being 10 grams heavier.” Bob Bettinardi |
