Since 1976, The European Tour Qualifying School has been held at the end of each season to establish which players, not otherwise exempt, will gain their playing privileges on the Tour for the following season through a qualifying competition.

The Qualifying School is held in three stages _ dependant on the individual's status - at a series of venues in the UK and Continental Europe. In 2009, the initial 72 hole event - known as the First Qualifying Stage - is split in two sections (Section A and Section B), played from 15-18 September; the Second Qualifying Stage is played over 72 holes from 20-23 November with the Final Stage taking place over 108 holes (six rounds) at PGA Golf de Cataluyna in Spain from 28 November _ December 3.

The leading 30 players (plus those tied for 30th place) will earn Category 11b Membership of The European Tour for 2010, which expires at the end of that season.

Held in two stages, the Senior Tour Qualifying School takes place over an eight-day period in Portugal in November 2009. Stage 1 on 12 and 13 November is held over 36 holes with the Finals played over 72 holes from 16-19 November.

There are two forms of Card available to the top 18 players from the Finals. The leading six players earn Category 6 Membership and players ranked 7-18 are ranked as Category 9b Members.
