Els Completes Return From Injury with dunhill Victory

Reuters - Ernie Els cast aside any lingering doubts about his fitness with a three stroke victory at the dunhill championship at Leopard Creek Country Club. In what developed into a straight shoot-out with overnight leader Ulrich van den Berg of South Africa, Els carded a four under par 68 to finish on 14 under par 274 and overtake his fellow South African on the back nine. Els was playing in just his second comeback tournament after knee surgery following a sailing accident at the end of July. "It's a dream, but it took a lot of work and a lot of rehab. After an injury like that, you're unsure of the future and how it will react," Els told reporters after his 22nd European Tour triumph.

Ernie's Eagle Takes him within two of the lead at dunhill championship

Reuters - Ernie Els eagled the 18th hole to close the gap on leader Ulrich van den Berg to just two strokes after the third round of the dunhill championship. While Van den Berg tore around the par 72 course at Leopard Creek Country Club in 65 strokes to move to 12 under par for the tournament, Els only made a move on the last nine holes and his eagle on the last hole lifted him into second place on 10 under.

Bothma One Clear at Leopard Creek

Michiel Bothma takes a one stroke lead into the weekend in the dunhill championship at Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa but will have to fight off a determined chasing pack if he is to lift his first European Tour title on Sunday. Bothma lies on nine under par 135 with fellow South African’s Titch Moore and Louis Oosthuizen and England’s Philip Archer his nearest challengers on eight under par. Defending champion Charl Schwartzel lies in a group on seven under par while triple Major Champion Ernie Els is stalking them all at six under.

Brilliant Back Nine Puts Bothma in the Lead at dunhill championship

Reuters – South Africa’s Michiel Bothma finished his last nine holes in 31 strokes to take the lead of the rain delayed dunhill championship at Leopard Creek Country Club. Bothma, who was four under par through nine holes when play was stopped on Thursday due to bad light, took advantage of benign early morning conditions to finish with an eight under par 64 and a two stroke lead over England’s Phillip Archer. Archer shot 66 on Thursday before thunderstorms stopped play for over two hours and the afternoon field were unable to complete their rounds.

Els headlines the field for the dunhill championship

Following his return to competitive action in last week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club, Ernie Els will return to The European Tour fold this week for the first time since the Open Championship in July when he headlines the field for the dunhill championship at Leopard Creek. Understandably, after over four months out of the game following knee surgery, the two time European Tour Order of Merit winner was a little rusty in Sun City, but with the cobwebs blown away, the 36 year old three time Major winner will start favourite at the Mpumalanga venue, arguably one of the most unusual and distinctive golf courses on The European Tour.
