He enjoyed a fine 2005 season with several superb performances, but the only thing missing from Chris DiMarco’s golfing CV last year was a victory. The 37 year old American put that right in The Gulf however, with a sensational performance to win the inaugural Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. Playing in his first European Tour event outside the Majors and World Golf Championships, DiMarco claimed the €275,411 (£188,162) first prize after a thrilling final day’s play at the immaculately presented Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
‘Beware the injured golfer’ is a well-worn phrase but never was its authenticity more truly exhibited than in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Golf Championship were an ailing Henrik Stenson produced sensational golf to storm into the lead after some truly exhilarating third round action at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club. The 29 year old Swede carded a new course record, ten under par 62, to move to 16 under par 200 for the tournament, one shot clear of American Chris DiMarco, who recovered from a double bogey six at the first hole to post a 63 for 201, and two in front of Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiménez who returned a 64 for 202.
It may be the land where the falcon is held in high regard, as the striking clubhouse facia at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club exhibits, but it was an eagle which was the bird of choice for Charl Schwartzel as he swooped into the lead at the halfway stage of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. The 21 year old South African notched his eagle three at the 549 yard tenth hole, rolling in a 25 foot putt after a superb two iron second shot had arrowed the centre of the green, on his way to a second round, course record equalling 66 and a nine under par total of 135.
While the swirling wind made scoring tricky for many of the competitors in the first round of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, Keith Horne, who grew up on the Durban coast in South Africa, found little problem as he moved smoothly into the lead. The 34 year old, who plays on his native Sunshine Tour and the Asian Tour but who qualified for the tournament through finishing in the top five of the South African Airways Open in December, made the most of his opportunity with a flawless six under par 66 to post a new course record and open up a two shot lead over his nearest challengers.
