Kevin Stadler eagled the final hole at The Vines Resort and Country Club for the third successive day to puncture local favourite Nick O'Hern's challenge for his first European Tour title in the Johnnie Walker Classic. The 26 year old son of former Masters Champion, Craig, conjured up a superb three iron from 220 yards to 12 inches for a tap-in eagle three to claim the title with a 20 under par total of 268, two ahead of Perth resident O'Hern.
Kevin Stadler was no more than a ‘Walrus’ pup of two years old when his father, Craig, captured the Masters Green jacket at Augusta National in 1982. Now, nearly a quarter of a century later, the full grown Stadler Junior can emerge from the considerable shadow of his famous dad by landing his first title on The European Tour International Schedule. The 26 year old from Scottsdale, Arizona, who favours a goatee rather than his father’s trademark walrus moustache which inspired that moniker, holed a ten foot eagle putt on the final hole at The Vines Resort and Country Club to carry a two stroke lead into the last day of the Johnnie Walker Classic.
Korea’s KJ Choi skilfully avoided the kangaroos roaming The Vines Resort and Country Club and bounded into the halfway lead at the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth. The 35 year old, who now resides in Texas, holds a two stroke advantage over American Kevin Stadler. Choi added a 66 to his opening 65 for a 13 under par total of 131 while Stadler – son of former Masters Champion, Craig – birdied the last for a 69 and 133 while his fellow joint leader after the first round, Adam Scott, fired a 71 for a share of third with fellow Australians Tony Carolan and Richard Green on 135.
Adam Scott lived up to his reputation as a confirmed front runner by firing an eight under par 64 to occupy a familiar position after the first round of the Johnnie Walker Classic at The Vines Resort and Country Club, Perth, Australia. The 25 year old from Adelaide, a wire to wire champion last year, moved a significant step closer to his first victory on home soil with his hard-earned score, which included an eagle, eight birdies and two bogeys and enabled him to share the first round lead with American Kevin Stadler.
Adam Scott returns home to Australia this week to launch his defence of the Johnnie Walker Classic at The Vines Resort & Country Club, Perth, against a truly international field featuring 24 nations and five of the top 15 players in the world. Leading the entries is World Number Three Retief Goosen, who is attempting to win the title for a second time following his magnificent victory in 2002 at Lake Karrinyup Country Club, also in Perth.
