With arms aloft and the cheers of the adoring home crowd ringing in his ears, Mardan Mamat created history as the first Singaporean to win on The European Tour when he held off the defending champion Nick Dougherty of England for a one stroke victory in the OSIM Singapore Masters.
England’s Nick Dougherty moved within a stroke of local favourite Mardan Mamat going into the final round of the OSIM Singapore Masters at Laguna National Golf and Country Club as he attempts to become only the third player in European Tour history to successfully defend his maiden title.
Singapore’s Mardan Mamat carries the weight of expectation of the home nation on his shoulders as he takes a one stroke lead into the weekend of the OSIM Singapore Masters, while The European Tour’s young guns have plenty to do if they are to challenge for the title. Mamat fired a two under par 70 at Laguna National Golf and Country Club which lifted him to nine under par 135, while leading The European Tour challenge, is 25 year old Wade Ormsby from Australia at six under par 138 with the English pair of Ross Fisher, also 25, and Nick Dougherty (23), and Swede Peter Hanson (28) a further shot back in the group on five under par.
A lucky eagle helped lift Australian Marcus Fraser into a share of the lead with home favourite Mardan Mamat of Singapore after the first round of the OSIM Singapore Masters at Laguna National Golf and Country Club. Fraser looked to be in all sorts of trouble when he pushed his three wood second shot on the par five 15th into thick rough but he played an exquisite recovery which bounced twice before dropping into the cup.

Hamat fired a sublime seven under par 65 over the Laguna National Golf and Country Club to take an early two stroke lead.

The Lion City will welcome England’s own young lion, Nick Dougherty, as defending champion when the hunt for the OSIM Singapore Masters title begins at Laguna National Golf and Country Club this week. Three top tens in his first six events of the 2006 season and a current position of seventh on The European Tour Order of Merit will ensure Dougherty arrives in Singapore in confident mood for the defence of his first European Tour title.
