Despite a stumble at the final hole, Jean Van de Velde ended a 13 year wait for his second European Tour title when he won the Madeira Island Open Caixa Geral de Depositos. Van de Velde held a four stroke lead standing on the 72nd tee, but the man who is renowned for taking a triple-bogey at the last to subsequently end his 1999 Open Championship chances, double bogeyed Santo da Serra Golf Club's 18th. He still, though, had a shot to spare to avoid a play-off with England’s Lee Slattery. A closing four under par 68 for a 15 under par 273 total, was a shot better than Slattery, who birdied the last just in front of Van de Velde, and two strokes better than Spain's Pedro Linhart.

Jean Van de Velde takes a two stroke lead into the final round of the Madeira Island Open Caixa Geral de Depositos after his third round of one under par 71 handed the Frenchman an 11 under aggregate on a day of very difficult conditions at Santo da Serra Golf Club that started with a four hour delay due to low cloud cover over the course. Those clouds were cleared by a swirling wind that grew stronger as the third round progressed, but Van de Velde stood firm to establish a two stroke advantage over 1999 Madeira Island Open champion Pedro Linhart of Spain, who’s 69 moved him to nine under for the tournament and into second place – one stroke ahead of Irishman Damien McGrane, Jarmo Sandelin of Sweden and the English pair of Lee Slattery and Simon Wakefield.

The Madeira Island Open Caixa Geral de Depositos is set for a thrilling weekend of golf, with two of the games most enduring personalities – Sweden’s Jarmo Sandelin and Frenchman Jean Van de Velde – leading the field at the halfway stage. It is somewhat fitting that Van de Velde and Sandelin, two men looking to return to golf’s highest plateau, are among the main contenders for a title that will be decided on a mountain top at the stunning Santo da Serra Golf Club.

Sweden’s Jarmo Sandelin tamed the swirling, gusting winds amidst the mountains of Madeira to produce a flawless opening round of six under par 66 at the Madeira Island Open Caixa Geral de Depositos. His bogey free effort was, according to the man himself, the first time he had played 18 competitive holes without dropping a stroke in five years and gave the 38 year old a two shot lead over a five strong chasing pack that includes 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie of Scotland.
