He started his professional victory quest with a maiden success at Gleneagles in 2001 and Paul Casey continued to show his love affair with the famous Scottish venue when he claimed his sixth European Tour International Schedule title in the 2006 Johnnie Walker Championship.
The 28 year old Englishman carded a final round 72 on the PGA Centenary Course – venue for The 2014 Ryder Cup - for a 16 under par total of 276 and victory by a shot from Denmark’s Søren Hansen and Andrew Marshall of England. The win earned him €341,667 (£233,330).
Paul Casey gave himself the ideal opportunity to notch a second victory in the Johnnie Walker Championship when he overtook overnight leader Colin Montgomerie to snatch pole position going into Sunday’s final round on the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles.
It has been claimed, by Welsh health psychologist Cliff Arnall, that, statistically, June 23rd is the happiest day of the year. He might well have converted Colin Montgomerie to that belief as the Scot spent the day, his 43rd birthday, basking in the adoring gaze of the Scottish galleries as he moved into the lead at the halfway stage of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
For his first competitive outing at Gleneagles, it was mightily impressive. Thomas Björn, whose first tournament success came in Scotland at Loch Lomond in 1996, gave himself the chance of another victory north of the border when a superb eight under par 65 saw him take the first round pole position on his debut in the Johnnie Walker Championship.
Colin Montgomerie will celebrate his 43rd birthday this week in the wonderful setting of The Gleneagles Hotel as he returns to his Scottish roots for the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles following the dramatic events of last week’s US Open Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club.
