Tiger Woods delivered another peerless performance at Medinah Country Club to rack up his 12th Major Championship and move closing to supplanting Jack Nicklaus as the most prolific accumulator of Majors in golfing history. Woods, who started the final round of the 88th US PGA Championship tied with England’s Luke Donald, closed with a 68 for an 18 under par total of 270 and a five stroke victory over Shaun Micheel with Donald, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott sharing third place.
On a day of stupendous shot-making at Medinah Country Club – which saw no fewer than ten players share the lead at one juncture – England’s Luke Donald proved the equal of Tiger Woods by matching the World’s Number One shot for shot to move into the final day of the 88th US PGA Championship tied with the American superstar.Although Woods signed for one stroke less than Donald – a 65 to a 66 – their matching totals of 202, 14 under par, mean that the pair will go head to head in a Sunday spectacular with the season’s final Major on the line.
A little over a year ago, Thomas Björn produced a superb performance which, very nearly, brought him victory in the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey. In the end, the Dane had to settle for a share of second place with Steve Elkington, one shot behind eventual Champion Phil Mickelson, but he will return to try again this year at Medinah Country Club, part of the strongest European Tour entry ever to contend in a Major Championship in America.
