It was another wonderful performance from Ian Woosnam’s Team, summed up in one perfect shot from Paul Casey, who ended his and David Howell’s match against Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson in outrageous style with a hole in one on the Palmer Course’s par three 14th.

Europe have extended their lead at The 2006 Ryder Cup to three points after toppling the USA’s highest ranked partnerships in the Saturday morning Fourballs. Sergio Garcia and José Maria Olazábal defeated Chris DiMarco and Phil Mickelson 3 & 2, before Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood disposed of Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods by the same scoreline to leave the home side leading 7 ˝ to 4 ˝.

World Number Three Jim Furyk of the United States struck the first tee shot at 8am and found the fairway, before his playing partner, Tiger Woods, hooked his drive into the water on the left-hand side of the first hole.

Europe will attempt to make golfing history at The K Club this week when they bid for a third successive victory over the United States in The Ryder Cup. Since 1979, when players from the Continent joined the biennial contest for the first time, European Teams have been hugely successful in the game’s greatest team event and, indeed, in the past ten matches from 1985 to 2004, Europe have won six times and tied once. Never, however, have they tasted victory three times in a row.
