In a repeat of four years ago, Ireland’s Padraig Harrington lifted the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship trophy as well as the team prize in partnership with amateur JP McManus. Unlike 2000, the €630,566 first prize cheque had the additional benefit of thrusting Harrington into contention to win his first European Tour Order of Merit. Victory at St Andrews moved Harrington up three places to second on the Order of Merit, just €218,185 behind Ryder Cup team-mate Paul Casey of England.

After the low scoring of the first two rounds at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the Scottish wind got up to turn the traditional moving day into a damage limitation exercise as some of the world’s best players were blown down the leaderboard at Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and St Andrews. At the close of a testing third round, Bradley Dredge remained in front but the Welshman had seen his three-shot overnight lead whittled down to one by Irish Ryder Cup player Padraig Harrington.

Paul Casey’s penchant for taking his putter out of the equation returned to inflict further damage to his rivals as he led after the opening day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The Englishman carded a nine under par 63 at Kingsbarns to lead by a shot from Johan Edfors and Bradley Dredge, who is now the proud holder of the record for the extended Old Course at St Andrews.
