(Reuters) – Justin Rose claimed his first European Tour title in over four years with a two shot triumph in the MasterCard Masters at Huntingdale Golf Club in Melbourne. The Englishman claimed the €170,353 (£115,359) first prize to move to fifth on the Order of Merit and 51st on the Official World Golf Ranking.
Justin Rose gave himself the ideal opportunity to claim his first European Tour title in over four years when a fine 68 at Huntingdale Golf Club in Melbourne moved the resurgent 26 year old Englishman into a two shot lead going into the final round of the MasterCard Masters.
Despite a disappointing finish, which featured bogeys at both the 17th and 18th holes, Australian amateur Aaron Pike held onto the halfway lead in the MasterCard Masters at Huntingdale Golf Club, but his nearest challenger going into the weekend is now the resurgent Englishman Justin Rose.
As Australia dominated the opening day of the first Ashes Test against England in Brisbane, amateur golfer Aaron Pike, a former cricketer who once dreamed of being the next Shane Warne, showed his decision to turn to golf was a good one as a stunning opening 64 gave him the lead after the first round of the MasterCard Masters.
The MasterCard Masters takes its place on The European Tour International Schedule for the first time this week with Michael Campbell, the 2005 US Open Champion, and Ryder Cup star, Paul Casey, leading a stellar international cast lining-up against Australia’s finest at the Huntingdale Golf Club in Melbourne.
