For the second consecutive week, Argentinan superstar Ángel Cabrera had a magical Sunday that involved a play-off.
A week after he came so close to winning his third Major championship at Augusta National in the Masters Tournament, Cabrera fired a sensational final round of 64 before beating fellow countryman Rafael Gomez in the first play-off hole at the 82nd Abierto OSDE del Centro.
"I was a little upset with myself because I couldn’t mix in the fight. I had not played well any day  but the good thing was that today I started with luck and hit a good shot at one and it gave me some confidence. I birdied hole two and then I said, 'it's up to me, I have to keep making birdies.'"
With the par 71, 6,876-yard layout playing less difficult than the other days, Cabrera added two birdies on the seventh and ninth that gave saw him climb the leaderboard. A bogey on the tenth did not distract Cabrera and then he found birdies at the 12th, 13th, 16th and a closing eagle at the par five 18th after chipping in from off the green.
"It was awesome (the eagle 18). Actually I was lucky that the ball stopped there, close to the hole and I could make one of my best chips in recent times," he said about the climactic moment of his round.
Playing the 18th again in the play-off, Cabrera found the fairway, while Gomez fell into a crossbunker. His shot from the sand went in sponsor tents, opening the door to Cabrera’s victory, his eighth at his home course, becoming the top winner of this event along with the Argentine Martin Pose.
"In a playoff no matter the names. If you mishit all you did in 72 holes it doesn’t count. I was very focused. I hit a very good start and then a very good chip and putt was perfect," Cabrera said on the winning birdie.
"For me it is very important victory, here in Villa Allende, with my people, my house and that  belongs to the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica for me is an honor."
Cabrera has two Latin American Tour victories in as many starts.
