European Tour Weekly heads to Bulgaria for the first time this week for the 48th Volvo World Match Play Championship at Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort. Bulgaria becomes the 40th different country to host an event on the International Schedule, and as always we will report all the latest news from the range.
Last year Nicolas Colsaerts claimed the second European Tour title of his career, having won the Volvo China Open in 2011. The big-hitting Belgian beat Graeme McDowell by one hole in the final at Finca Cortesin GC, in Spain. ETW spoke to Colsaerts about his win 12 months ago and his hopes for the week ahead in Bulgaria.
In a second preview this week ETW takes a look at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal - BPI. The event has been a part of The European Tour International Schedule since 1993 and returns to Santo de Serra where it was staged every year until 2009 until it moved to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo. Last year Ricardo Santos fired a stunning final round of 63 on home soil to capture his maiden European Tour title and ETW met up with him before his defence of the trophy.
Colin Montgomerie was recently inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame through the international ballot for being one of Europe’s finest golfers over the last two decades. His achievements have included winning a record-breaking 40 tournaments worldwide and eight European Tour Order of Merits, including seven consecutive from 1993. He has represented Europe in eight successive Ryder Cup matches from 1991 and served as captain for the European team victory in 2010 at Celtic Manor.
Together with all of the latest news and statistics from the Tour, this completes another edition of European Tour Weekly.
