Thomas Björn will descend the Swiss Alps today safe in the knowledge that his play-off victory at Crans-Sur-Sierre has propelled him to the top of the European Ryder Cup Points List, back into the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking and into the top ten in The Race to Dubai.
That bounty of benefits will bring a priceless boost of confidence as the big Dane looks to continue his outstanding career at golf’s highest level.
One of the first text messages Björn received after defeating Craig Lee at the first extra hole of yesterday’s sudden-death play-off was from European Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley, while his move to 44th on the World Ranking and eighth place in The Race to Dubai were huge sources of satisfaction from the man who has now won 14 times on The European Tour.
“I have to stay in that top 50 until the end of the year and hopefully improve the position,” said Björn.
“When you are top 30 in the world you feel like you can compete. From a confidence point of view I feel like if I can get back there I will go into big championships knowing I can compete and not have a fluke week. My world ranking over time has shown I can compete with the best. I feel like I have a lot of golf left in me.
“It is nice to be back in the top 50. It gives you the opportunity to play some big tournament for the rest of the year.
“Winning in Crans obviously moves me up nicely in The Race to Dubai too,” Björn continued. “There are some guys quite a bit in front of me though, so it will be very difficult to win it, but hopefully I can continue to play well and contend and then we will see what position I am in going to Dubai.”
