Stuart Nixon (EuropeanTour)
Stuart Nixon (EuropeanTour)

Stuart Nixon, a long-term friend and consultant to The European Tour, has completed a remarkable and courageous 60km walk on behalf of Multiple Sclerosis – despite being wheelchair-bound for the past 15 years!

Stuart, Deputy Chairman of the MS Society, undertook the grueling challenge of walking in a specially designed frame from Buckingham Palace in London to the 2012 Olympic Park and back again, a route known as the ‘Jubilee Greenway’ and covering a total of 60kms – and appropriate number in the MS Society’s 60th anniversary.

In covering the journey between October 5 and 13 – a total of nine days on the road – Stuart, who has suffered from MS for 30 years, is hoping to raise over £60,000 for the charity’s 60th Anniversary campaign as a result of his efforts, included in which is a donation from The European Tour via its charitable arm, the Tour Players Foundation.

Following the 60km walk, Stuart is now three-quarters of the way towards that target, but hopes to reach the intended mark in due course.

Stuart has been a willing and valuable contributor to numerous European Tour events, including every BMW PGA Championship and Wales Open since 2009 and The Ryder Cup in 2010. A keen golf watcher himself, he has advised on the full range of facilities required at golf tournaments to accommodate fellow wheelchair users.

David Park, Charity Executive for The European Tour, said: "Stuart is a determined character who set his mind on overcoming the physical challenges of his illness to complete this 60 km walk in the charity’s 60th Anniversary year. His accomplishment of this charity walk has been a truly remarkable achievement which has inspired many people.

“Stuart has helped The European Tour address accessibility issues for all sorts of visitors to our tournaments who have mobility issues. We want golf in general and our tournaments in particular, to be as welcoming as possible to people, irrespective of their physical condition. To this end, Stuart's advice has helped ensure that we have continued to improve the disabled facilities at our events, including the BMW PGA Championship, the Wales Open and The Ryder Cup in 2010 and the forthcoming event in 2014 at Gleneagles".
