Rory McIlroy has won The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month for a third time in four months following his outstanding victory in the US PGA Championship, with which he completed back-to-back Major triumphs after his win in The 143rd Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.
McIlroy, who also won the award in May and July, receives an engraved alms dish and a Jeroboam of Moët & Chandon champagne, and continues a record-breaking season which has seen him take a commanding advantage at the top of The 2014 Race to Dubai and reclaim the Number One spot in the Official World Golf Ranking.
The 25 year old Northern Irishman, who won the May award following his BMW PGA Championship triumph at Wentworth Club, has also emulated Henrik Stenson’s achievement of winning three Golfer of the Month awards in four months (August, September, November) last year, and that of Ian Woosnam, who won three awards in 1987.
McIlroy said: “It’s always an honour to win the Golfer of the Month award. The award is important to me, and to have won it three times this year shows I’m having a really special season.
“But hopefully I’m not done yet – there’s still plenty of golf to be played, so it’d be great to add a fourth before the season is over.”
The European Tour Golfer of the Month Panel, comprising members of the Association of Golf Writers as well as commentators from television and radio, focused their attention on winning and exceptional performances on The European Tour International Schedule.
Scotland’s Marc Warren (Made in Denmark),Welshman Jamie Donaldson ( D+D REAL Czech Masters) and South Africa’s Hennie Otto (71° OPEN D’ITALIA presented by DAMIANI) all triumphed following McIlroy’s win at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.
In addition, Welshman Bradley Dredge finished runner-up in both Denmark and Czechoslovakia and Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher came within a whisker of an automatic place in Europe’s 2014 Ryder Cup team by finishing third in Italy, before being named as one of Captain Paul McGinley’s wild card picks for the match at Gleneagles.
Derek Lawrenson, Golf Correspondent of the Daily Mail and Chairman of the Association of Golf Writers, said: “It was another glorious month, in which Bradley Dredge emerged from the wilderness in spectacular style, Jamie Donaldson clinched his Ryder Cup place in grand manner and Stephen Gallacher played so well in Italy that he presented an unanswerable case for a wild card for Gleneagles.
“But The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month is rapidly becoming the golfer of every month – another Major, another victory for the unstoppable Rory McIlroy to make this a straightforward decision once more.”
Michael Harris, Editor of Golf Monthly, commended Dredge for “his gritty, determined performances, handling the heat and securing his future for 2015”, and James Haddock, Golf Reporter for Sky Sports News, added that “Stephen Gallacher showed great resolve, determination and skill, and the manner of his performance in Italy – bringing with it a wild card selection for The Ryder Cup – represented one of the finest performances of the month despite not winning the tournament”.
Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez (December), Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher (January), France’s Victor Dubuisson (February), Welshman Jamie Donaldson (March), France’s Alexander Levy (April) and Germany’s Martin Kaymer (June) have also won The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month awards this year.
Sweden’s Henrik Stenson won the DP World Championship, Dubai in 2013 to secure the Number One spot in The 2013 Race to Dubai, following which he was voted The 2013 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year.
