After a rollercoaster final round at Glendower GC, 22 year old Brandon Stone held his nerve to claim a maiden victory at The BMW SA Open hosted by City of Ekurhuleni. The young South African made only five pars alongside seven birdies and six bogeys on his way to shooting a 71 which was good enough to give him a two-shot victory over fellow countryman Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
Stone’s consistency was key to his victory this week hitting 75% of greens in regulation using a set of Ping S55 irons (3-9) along with a S55 pitching wedge and a pair of Ping, Glide sand and lob wedges.
He followed up his good iron play with a steady hand of the greens, averaging 1.667 putts per GIR, the second best in field. Using a Ping, Cadence TR Ketsch putter the rookie averaged 28.5 putts per round, the 13th best in field.
Stone made short work of the 7564 yard Glendower course, averaging 313.8 yards off the tee with his Ping, G30 driver, the eighth longest of anyone who competed last week.
Victory last week has propelled Stone from 249th in the World Rankings to 118th and there is little doubt that the 22 year old will have his sights set on breaking the top 100 as he heads to the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington GC for this week’s Joburg Open.
