South Africa's Charl Schwartzel continued his excellent early-season form by claiming the Valspar Championship on the US PGA Tour with a play-off victory over Bill Haas.

American Haas had started the day on eight under – one ahead of Canada’s Graham DeLaet – but is was Schwartzel who surged through the field with a closing five under par 67 at Innisbrook.

That saw the recent Tshwane Open winner set a clubhouse target of seven under par, and a bogey on the 16th meant Haas could only match his effort.

On the first trip back down the 18th Schwartzel won it with a par four, to add to the two European Tour titles he has already claimed on home soil this term.

The former Masters Tournament champion believes he is perfectly placed for a tilt at a second green jacket next month when the first Major Championship of the year takes place at Augusta National.

"There's nothing like that that gets you pumped like winning," Schwartzel told the US PGA Tour website.

"It's a place I feel very comfortable with and for me the best thing of all of it I've actually got my fade back.

"All over it's a really good boost to be going back and starting the first Major of the year; it's a really exciting week and I always look forward to it."
