Earned a debut in The Open Championship in 2015 thanks to a fine performance in the Alstom Open de France a fortnight earlier. Had led by two shots going into the final round at Le Golf National thanks to a third round seven under par 64, but finished with a 73 for a share of third place. Came agonisingly close to his first European Tour title at the Turkish Airlines Open in November 2015, carding a five under par 67 in the final round only to be beaten by one shot by a surging Victor Dubuisson. The success of the season, however, helped banish the frustrations of an injury-plagued 2014, which he spent recovering from surgery on both knees. Played mostly on the Sunshine Tour until he earned a European Tour card at the Qualifying School in 2010. Started playing the game as an 11 year old and turned professional at 21. Has won 13 Sunshine Tour titles, including four in 2010. Was the South African Amateur Champion in 2000. Like compatriot Charl Schwartzel, he has a passion for flying. Started hang-gliding five years ago, and hopes to gain his pilot’s licence one day.
