Hails from a family with a strong sporting pedigree as his mother, Gill, swam for England and his cousin, Matthew Smith, is a professional tennis player. Won his card at the 2007 European Tour Qualifying School after an emotional fortnight following the death of his grandfather, Harry, who first introduced him to the game at the age of nine, taking him down to the local pitch and putt. Won the English Amateur Championship in 2005 and looked destined for great things, but back injuries have hampered his progress, forcing him to miss large parts of the 2011, 2012 and 2015 seasons. Looked to be back on track in 2015, taking a share of third place in the Maybank Malaysian Open in February, but succumbed again a month later and missed the rest of the year and had a medical exemption for 2016. Used to enjoy extreme sports, although admits to having given up wakeboarding because of the risk of injury. Is competing in the 2017 schedule on a medical exemption, due to only playing four events last season.
