Hails from a family with a strong sporting pedigree as his mother, Gill, swam for England and his cousin, Matthew Smith, is a professional tennis player. Also enjoys a passion for music and used to DJ in the clubs and bars of Liverpool, specialising in house music. Won his card at the 2007 European Tour Qualifying School after an emotional fortnight following the death of his grandfather, Harry, who first introduced him to the game at the age of nine, taking him down to the local pitch and putt. Was blighted by injury in 2011 and 2012, but had some promising performances in the latter, finishing tied tenth in the Irish Open and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. Held a medical extension for 2013 and almost took full advantage when he led the field by two shots going into the final round of the Portugal Masters, before finishing tied third behind winner David Lynn. Used to enjoy extreme sports, although admits to having given up wakeboarding because of the risk of injury.
