Biography

Is mentored by Europe’s 2012 Ryder Cup captain José-María Olazábal, having played most of his junior golf at his local golf club in the seaside resort of Fuenterrabia, where Olazábal was born and raised. Has since made the short move over the French border to Biarritz, but still stays in regular contact with his idol and mentor. Won 11 titles in a glittering amateur career, including the 2010 Boys Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club in Scotland. Beat Germany’s Max Rotluff 4&3 in the final to emulate the achievement of Olazábal, whose name had been etched onto the same trophy back in 1983. “He’s a great player and a great guy too,” he said, “so I’m very lucky to know him. I looked up to him when I was growing up, and if I can be half as good as him, I’ll be very happy.” Finished in a tie for 16th place on his European Tour debut at the Iberdrola Open in May 2011, having secured his Tour card – aged 19 years and 24 days – at the Qualifying School Final Stage after finishing in 23rd place. Was the second youngest full Member of The European Tour in 2012 after Italian Matteo Manassero. While he struggled to make an impact in his rookie season, he earned an immediate return to the top tier after finishing seventh in the 2013 Challenge Tour Rankings, thanks to three runner-up finishes including one at the prestigious Rolex Trophy and another at the lucrative Kazakhstan Open.
