Greatest moment of his golfing career arrived in May 2003, when he produced a superb performance to win the PGA Championship at Wentworth Club. Eldest son of Antonio Garrido, who played in the first Ryder Cup open to Continental golfers, he won his first European Tour title in 1997 in the German Open. The same year he followed in his father’s footsteps, when he played in The Ryder Cup at Valderrama with Antonio on the bag. In the process, the Garridos became the second father and son combination to have played in The Ryder Cup after Percy and Peter Alliss. In his amateur days, he won the English Open Amateur Stroke Play whilst on leave from National Service. Turned professional in 1993 with a handicap of plus four, and promptly began his predilection for wearing long sleeved golf shirts on the course. The trend started because of his father’s clothing deal, which supplied both long and short sleeved shirts. Antonio did not like the long sleeved ones, so Ignacio took them and got into a habit of wearing them. Other interests include the martial art of Taekwondo.
