Biography

Twice a winner on the European Senior Tour, and prior to turning 50 won five times on The European Tour. In 1979, shared with compatriot Seve Ballesteros the distinction of being the first Continental golfers to be selected for The Ryder Cup. Also teamed up with Ballesteros to win the 1977 World Cup in the Philippines. Claimed the Spanish Seniors three years in succession from 1995-1997, and is a five time winner of the Spanish PGA Championship. His eldest son, Ignacio, winner of the 2003 PGA Championship, is a successful European Tour player and made The Ryder Cup Team in 1997, making the pair only the second father and son combination to play in The Ryder Cup after Percy and Peter Alliss. His brother, German, is also a senior professional.
