Competed in two Ryder Cups, in 1991 and 1995, when he was Europe's joint top points scorer at Oak Hill, with three points out of four. Partnered Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer to victories before beating Brad Faxon in the singles. Deserved that success after being the unfortunate player to have his name placed in the envelope when Steve Pate withdrew injured from the singles at Kiawah Island in 1991. Winner of six titles on The European Tour International Schedule, although victory has eluded him since 1994.
