Claimed the 35th and final card at the European Tour Qualifying School after doing things the hard way. Led after the first round with a 67 but eventually squeezed in after a closing 74. Father, Brian, a 12 handicapper, persuaded him to take up golf at the age of 16 and got down from 24 to five handicap in his first full year. Signed semi-professional forms for Lincoln City FC but decided to concentrate on golf instead. Turned professional late in life at age 31 in 1997 with a handicap of plus three.
