Biography

Started playing as a youngster when his father gave him a full set of clubs. Nicknamed ‘Wild Thing’. Pulled off an incredible victory in 1991 US PGA Championship. Called in as ninth alternate and won the title at Crooked Stick. Captured the Open Golf Championship at St Andrews in 1995 after a play-off with Costantino Rocca. In December 1999, he partnered England’s Laura Davies to victory in the JC Penney Classic. Won his first individual title for six years by capturing the 2001 BMW International Open at Golfclub München Nord Eichenreid, after a thrilling duel with Padraig Harrington. Took up Membership of The European Tour at the start of the 2002 season, but the year ended sadly for him when, playing in the Far East, he received news that his mother, Lou, had died. Enjoys writing lyrics and playing the guitar. Recorded a largely autobiographical album entitled ‘My Life’ featuring guest performances from a variety of well known artists including Willie Nelson. Instead of flying to tournament sites nowadays, he purchased a large mobile home and drives to many events. Involved in many charitable causes, most notably Make-a-Wish Foundation and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Donated $25,000 to the Nationwide Tour’s State Farm Open in 2002, increasing the purse from $425,000 to $450,000. Returned to form in 2004 by winning the Buick Invitational after a play-off with Luke Donald and Chris Riley and made 17 of 22 cuts to finish 21st on the US PGA Tour.
