Spaniard Alejandro Cañizares will be hoping to consolidate his place at the head of the first Re-Rank of the season when he tees up on home soil at the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca.

This week’s event is the final chance for players in category 11 – those who earned their cards at the 2009 Qualifying School, or through finishing 11th to 20th in the Challenge Tour Rankings – to improve their ranking, with the second opportunity coming in August.

Cañizares currently leads the way with €191,219, thanks largely to his tied third finish at the Open de España, which earned him €103,333.

Cañizares had been trailed by Fredrik Andersson-Hed, but the Swede’s victory at last week’s BMW Italian Open saw him move to category three, meaning Australia’s Rick Kulacz moved up to second place.

Kulacz has earned €99,962 in The 2010 Race to Dubai but the €16,275 he collected at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship was rendered ineligible for the purposes of the Re-Rank, as he was playing under a sponsor’s invitation.

The same applies to the €35,963 Stephen Gallagher earned at the Dubai Desert Classic, Qatar Masters and Volvo China Open, meaning the Scotsman is in fourth on €75,184, one place behind South Africa’s James Kamte, who has won €77,470.

England’s John Parry is the leading Challenge Tour graduate in fifth place, having collected €69,127 so far this season.

The top 20 after this week will be re-ranked in money order whilst those outside the top 20 will continue in the order they finished at last year’s Qualifying School – Final Stage or in the final 2009 Challenge Tour Rankings. The first event to be affected will be the Madrid Masters.
