Estanislao Goya was inspired by the presence of his girlfriend and fellow professional golfer Carly Booth as the Argentinian moved into contention at The European Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage thanks to a three under par third round of 70 over PGA Catalunya Resort’s Tour Course.
The 25 year old, who led the field here last year after the fourth round before claiming the fourth European Tour card on offer, is now just one shot off the lead on nine under at the midway point of the 2013 edition and in line for a swift return to the top tier.
Having teed off at the tenth, Goya carded three birdies and a bogey to reach the turn in two under before his shot of the day at the third, his 12th, as he fired a 129-yard bunker shot over the water and to within 12 feet before holing the putt for his only birdie of his back nine.
The Cordoba native admitted that he is enjoying having his other half by his side on a course which he clearly enjoys playing.
“Obviously it’s great company for me to have her here this week,” said Goya. “She supports me and helps me with everything, boosting my confidence. Last year I had my father here and unfortunately he couldn’t come this year but with my girlfriend here, it’s perfect.
“We don’t swap tips or anything. We let each other do their own thing and if we need any help or tips we can ask but we try to keep to our coaches and that works out good for us.
“It was good day for me because it’s one of those days where you have to hang in there, especially with the wind, and I did that nicely.
“There were some tricky holes on the way in with the strong cross winds and I did well there and I gave myself a chance for the rest of the tournament.
“I'm playing nicely and hopefully I can keep the performance levels for the next three rounds. It’s a lovely course and if you can play well it’s even better.
“It’s a very long week and you have to be patient and take it step by step. We are still only at halfway in the tournament I just need to stay in there. It’s long for everybody and everybody gets tired so I'm in the same boat.”
