Jose Maria Olazabal mastered the West course to become the fourth European golfer to follow success in the US Masters with victory in the Volvo PGA Championship in the same year.  The Spaniard, who began the last round three behind Ernie Els, eagled the fourth, chipped in from 15 yards at the 11th and with another birdie at the next tied Els on 14 under.  Els moved two ahead with birdies at the 12th and 13th, but three putted the 14th.  Olazabal tied again with a 21 foot birdie at the 15th, and with more birdies at the last two holes took the title by one stroke from Els, who birdied the 18th.
