Sven Struver opened the account for first-time winners on the 1996 European Tour by shooting ten birdies in 15 holes during a closing 63. But he had to wait until Monday morning to find out if it was good enough! Heading out seven shots behind leader Ernie Els, the German started the third and final round of the weather-shortened Championship with three steady pars, birdied the fourth, and then had six more in a row from the sixth. Three more birdies followed against a single bogey for the low round of the event. Els required three birdies in the last seven holes, but he was compelled to settle for a share of second place with David Feherty.
