David Carter has spent the last 17 months believing that every day alive is a bonus after undergoing life-saving brain surgery in a Dubai hospital. On Sunday at Druids Glen the bonus became a jackpot when the 26-year-old from Chesterfield landed the Murphy’s Irish Open title and a £159,991 cheque.

Marien Kakebeeke, Managing Director of Murphy Brewery Ireland has confirmed a record prize fund of IR£1,150,000 (Stg £1 million) and a winner’s cheque for IR£191,700.
David Carter won the Murphy's Irish Open
David Carter won the Murphy's Irish Open after having been forced in to a play-off against Colin Montgomerie. It was a dramatic finish on the first extra hole with Montgomerie putting his second shot in to the water hazard in front of the green, and when missing his attempt for bogey he conceded the hole to Carter who was safely on the green in two.
